Understanding Troops in Evony: Types, Strengths, and Best Uses
In this tutorial, we’ll take a closer look at the different types of troops in Evony and how they should be used for various attack strategies. There are four basic types of troops: Siege, Archers, Ground, and Mounted. Troops are not created equal; each type has its own unique strengths and weaknesses, which can significantly impact your success in battles.
Basic Troop Types and Their Strengths
To help you understand troop dynamics, think of the classic game Rock, Paper, Scissors. Troops in Evony behave in a similar way—each type has an advantage over one type but is vulnerable to another. Here's how they compare:
- Archers beat Mounted troops
- Mounted beat Ground troops
- Ground beat Archers
Or, put another way:
- Archers are weak against Ground troops
- Ground troops are weak against Mounted troops
- Mounted troops are weak against Archers
Siege Units: The Neutral Force
Siege units are a bit different. They are considered neutral because they don't have a distinct advantage or weakness against other troop types. However, since they are machines, repairs are costly and can only be done using valuable gems at the trap factory. Unlike Siege, the other troops (Archers, Ground, and Mounted) can be healed using resources like food, iron, wood, and stone, or recalled through the Holy Palace.
Troop Breakdown Summary
- Archers: Strong against Mounted troops, vulnerable to Ground troops
- Ground: Strong against Archers, vulnerable to Mounted troops
- Mounted: Strong against Ground troops, vulnerable to Archers
- Siege: Neutral with no distinct weaknesses, but costly to repair
Troops for PvE (Player vs. Environment) - Attacking Monsters
When it comes to hunting monsters and Boss Monsters in Evony, Mounted troops are your best option. Here are some tips for PvE attacks:
- For most monster hunts, it’s ideal to use a single tier of Mounted troops, meaning all of your troops should be at the same level.
- The exception is the Pan Monster, which has unique strengths and weaknesses. When attacking Pan, the game will provide you with recommendations on the best troop type to use for the battle.
Enthrallio Alliance Support
In the Enthrallio Alliance, stronger members often help weaker players grow by organizing what is known as a Guaranteed Win Attack. In these attacks, the stronger player ensures the alliance wins the battle, making it easy for everyone to benefit from the rally. If a rally is not a guaranteed win, the alliance leader will post a message in the alliance chat to inform players.
Tips for Joining a Rally:
- For a Guaranteed Win: Join the rally with just one Mounted troop and any general. We recommend using a T1 Mounted troop as it's cheaper to heal.
- For Non-Guaranteed Wins: Send all of your best Mounted troops (unless attacking Pan). Ideally, use troops of the same tier, but you can mix tiers if you want to increase attack power—just keep in mind that this may lead to more wounded troops.
Quick Tip for Faster Rally Joining:
Create a preset containing only one T1 Mounted troop without a general. When you need to join a rally, you can quickly use this preset and simply add a general later, saving time.
Troops for PvP (Player vs. Player) - Attacking Other Players
In PvP battles, attacking other players requires a different strategy. Instead of sending a single tier of troops, you should send a mix of tiers, a tactic known as Layering. We will cover layering in detail in a separate guide, but for now, here are the basics:
- For beginners, it's recommended to train:
- 2,500 troops of T1-T5 of each troop type
- 4,500 troops of T6-T9 of each troop type
- For T10 and above, create as many troops as possible, as these can be upgraded once you unlock T11.
This troop setup will help prepare you for Killing Events (KE) and Server vs. Server (SvS) events, reducing your wounded troops and increasing your kill rate.
Don’t Forget About Traps!
There are also four types of traps in Evony, designed to counter specific troop types. Just as there are four types of troops, there are four types of traps. Build different types and levels of traps to better defend against tiered troop attacks.
Conclusion
By understanding the strengths and weaknesses of each troop type, you'll be better equipped to choose the right troops for each situation, whether it’s attacking monsters or other players. Don’t forget to check out our detailed guide on layering and traps for more advanced strategies!
