Introduction to Generals in Evony: A Beginner’s Guide

In this tutorial, we’ll provide a basic introduction to Generals in Evony. Generals are an essential part of your strategy, and there are many different ways to obtain and use them. Each general comes with unique strengths and weaknesses, so choosing the right one is critical to your success in the game. As you grow stronger in Evony, you will need more resources to progress, so it’s important to develop your generals and deputies to create a powerful attack march that will help you keep advancing.

How to Get Generals in Evony

There are several ways to acquire Generals or General Fragments in Evony, including:

  • Capturing a Non-Player Character (NPC) Sub City
  • Daily Free Chest in the Gems Shop
  • Relic Slate Puzzle
  • Spinning the Wheel of Fortune
  • Buying Packs
  • Champion’s Gift
  • Completing Events
  • The Tavern

Among these methods, the Tavern is the most reliable place to obtain generals, though not every general is available there. Some generals are only obtainable through paid packs. Does that mean you need to spend money to get great generals? No, but spending money can speed up the process for some players.

General Fragments are pieces of a general. Once you collect 30 fragments, you can create that general.

General Quality and Types

Generals in Evony are ranked by color, with Silver, Green, Blue, and Gold frames. The White, Green, and Blue generals are generally less useful, and while they can serve as placeholders in Sub Cities, they are often better off being sold.

The most important generals to focus on are the Purple and Gold generals. Not every Gold general is great, and only a few Purple generals are worth keeping, so it’s essential to choose wisely.

Types of Generals

Each general in Evony has a specific role, or “job,” such as:

  • Leading Troops
  • Duty Generals
  • Gathering Generals
  • Looting Generals
  • Rally Generals
  • Monster Hunting Generals
  • PvP Generals
  • Range and Siege Generals
  • Sub City Generals

As you progress in the game, you’ll unlock more generals and can switch them based on the task you want to perform.

Identifying a General’s Purpose

Most high-quality generals come with an initial skill book that gives you a hint about their best use. For example, a skill book might say, “while leading armies” or “when set as main defense general.” Pay attention to these descriptions to use your generals effectively. For detailed information on specific generals, you can refer to websites like EvonyGuideWiki or Evony TKR Guide.

Common General Mistakes

New players often use generals inappropriately. Here are some common mistakes:

  • Cleopatra: Cleopatra is valuable for her Double Drop (DD) skill, which gives a 20% chance to double monster rewards. Use her only when joining a rally, and equip her with a ring to increase her DD percentage. Never use Cleopatra for defense or offense—this isn’t her role.
  • Constance I / Gaius Marius: These generals are best for gathering resources. Their skill books mention returning additional resources when gathering, making them ideal for use when your troops are out collecting resources. Equip them with gathering-related gear and skill books.
  • Queen Boudica: Boudica is a great wall general. Her skill book mentions “while main defense general,” which means she should be stationed on your city’s wall. Don’t waste valuable skill books on her for attack or gathering—she’s meant for defense.

Buffs and Debuffs

Skill books can provide bonuses, known as Buffs, to your generals. These can enhance their abilities in battle or other activities. Additionally, some generals—especially those stationed in Sub Cities—can provide Debuffs to enemy attacks, such as reducing enemy mounted attacks or decreasing the range of an attacker. These generals are particularly valuable for defensive strategies.

Upgrading Your Generals

To make your generals stronger, you can:

  • Level them up
  • Enhance them by adding stars
  • Cultivate their base stats
  • Add Skill Books to improve their abilities
  • Unlock their Specialties at level 25

Once a general reaches level 20 and has 3 stars, you can also assign an Assistant General. Keep in mind that assistant generals don’t need equipment, dragons, or spiritual beasts. Only their skill books, red stars, and specialties will take effect.

Managing Your Generals Wisely

Be mindful of how you upgrade your generals, as resources like medals, gold, fragments, runes, and Blood of Ares are limited. It’s often easier to upgrade a free general as your main general and use premium generals as assistants, as fragments for free generals are easier to obtain.

If a general is no longer useful to you, you can sell them for gold. Premium generals can also be converted to fragments if you don’t need them yet, which might be useful later in the game.

Conclusion

Getting to know your generals and their roles is essential for progressing in Evony. Take notes, create a list if necessary, and refer to it until you’ve memorized each general’s purpose. These basic lessons will help new players get up to speed.
